Representatives of the Kansas Optometric Association work hard to protect the rights of optometrists to provide the best possible care for their patients while ensuring patient access to care and appropriate reimbursement.  KOA volunteers, staff and government relations professionals work together to educate legislators, agency representatives and other policy makers about the crucial role optometrists play in the overall health care delivery system.

Each legislative session, the KOA monitors legislation and advances the interests of optometrists and their patients. In past years, the KOA has worked to pass legislation designed to update the scope of practice of optometrists in Kansas and provided optometrists with the right to negotiate contracts with third party payers based on their practice models. The KOA has also balanced technological advances and patient convenience with public safety and appropriate standards of care.  In addition to its statewide operations, the KOA works on a national level, in conjunction with the American Optometric Association, to address federal issues that impact the profession and the public.  For more information on federal legislative issues, click here.
